I wonder if Mr Small might address the utter mess that is the CRU's software code, revealed by the leak?

Or the reason why Prof Jones saw fit to delete data and refuse access to his work?

@ Post #1: It's interesting that the best that can be pulled out of the Wegman report is essentially a criticism of the personalities of those who produced the original "Hockey Stick" paper. Neither Wegman nor the NRC report falsified the hockey stick itself, and the statistical methodology suggested by McIntyre and McKitrick does little to alter the observed warming trend. Overall I would regard McIntyre/McKitrick as a valid contribution to the debate, because it has helped to refine understanding of the statistical problems with proxy temperature reconstruction, and as a consequence further caveats have been included in the most recent IPCC report, the AR4. This is a good thing. Criticism, where it is robust and valid, is always a good thing, because it helps us get closer to the truth. Denialists misunderstand this principle and regard any criticism of any aspect of any of the hundreds of independent lines of evidence which support the theory of anthropogenic climate change, as evidence that the whole thing is a sham. This is unfortunate, but it does reveal the political or conspiracist bias which clouds their understanding of the issue.

Probably the first remotely sensible article I've read on the subject - not clouded with conspiracy (Alex Jones) or blustering protestations (Monboit).

It's worrying when the cold hard facts loose out to political spin and the emotional rantings of journalists who actually understand very little of the scientific basis of their beliefs. Cases like this highlight just how important it is that the general public should have some sort of understanding of how the peer review process works.

“• What is the current scientific consensus on the conclusions reached by Drs. Mann, Bradley and Hughes? [Referring to the hockey stick propagated in UN IPCC 2001 by Michael ‘Climategate’ Mann.]
Ans: Based on the literature we have reviewed, there is no overarching consensus on MBH98/99. As analyzed in our social network, there is a tightly knit group of individuals who passionately believe in their thesis. However, our perception is that this group has a self-reinforcing feedback mechanism and, moreover, the work has been sufficiently politicized that they can hardly reassess their public positions without losing credibility.”
AD HOC COMMITTEE REPORT ON THE ‘HOCKEY STICK’ GLOBAL CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTION, also known as The Wegman report was authored by Edward J. Wegman, George Mason University, David W. Scott, Rice University, and Yasmin H. Said, The Johns Hopkins University with the contributions of John T. Rigsby, III, Naval Surface Warfare Center, and Denise M. Reeves, MITRE Corporation.
