The puzzling thing is this: exactly how right-wing would you have to be to find Liddle’s comment vaguely amusing, never mind funny? I can imagine an English Defence League hooligan pausing for a moment – to decide whether it’s OK to approve of the comment – before tittering.

Liddles comments/’jokes’ are just shite and just remind me of when a 5/6 year old begins to grasp the heady concept of what makes a joke a joke. Auschwitz (like everything else!) should be the butt of humour but when a joke preys on the obvious parallel between burning and burgers, well………c’mon. The more contentious the subject, the more subtle the joke. THAT’S what makes it funny, not the obvious, tedious, crass rubbish that even Bernard Manning would have thrown out.
