Why the Labour Party should pass PR

There have been rather a lot of people around the left and the Labour Party today saying that the Labour Party should not go into coalition with the lib dems, and should not vote for any proportional system. Well of course a proportional system would mean the labour party losing some seats but looking at it in the long-term this would mean a much more progressive parliament for the future. If PR goes through and the lib dems and labour get close it becomes very very difficult for the tories to ever get back into power. If this is the case then the future of parliamentary politics can be held within the internal negotiations of a non-tory coalition, rather than time and again fighting the tories like we have seen in this election. For Labour MPs to stop PR going through would be to give the Tories a fighting chance for the future.

Agreed. Not that I’d be in favour of a coalition that would have the potential to be in permanent governance, and complacent in its outlook as a result. However, PR would give us momentum to change the electoral dynamic entirely – with smaller parties like the Greens/SNP/Plaid emerging stronger we could still change government without the Tories winning.
