Seriously
For such a huge event, cant we get half time commentators who say something a bit more incisive than “England need more confidence and self-belief”. Some people who aren’t necessarily ex-footballers. And by that I mean no disrespect to ex-footballers, but surely there is some value in widening the pool.

An excellent idea, that falls down when presented with just two words: Adrian Chiles. And the BBC are no better (though they do get lots of points for Alan Hansen, who is a bona-fide legend and genius). Last week they had a 15 minute interview with Ray Winstone about England’s chances. His qualifications seemed to be that a) he’s REALLY english and b) he’s a BLOKE, innit? Blokes love football! His erudite analysis consisted of ‘They should get stuck in more!’ Thanks Ray. Let’s please restrict football punditry to only those with at least some professional experience of football. Or at least exclude Mr Chiles and Mr Winstone.
