The prickish elite – how not to fight for gay rights

Over in America, a video showing one particularly cringeworthy piece of gay rights activism has gone viral. Chick-fil-a has been rightly been pilloried of late for the homophobic politics of its corporate leadership. As such, Adam M. Smith, a now-fired chief financial officer, decided to drive in to chick-fil-a and film himself bullying a cashier.

There is a certain cowardice to attacking somebody who is on the job in a customer service role, and who cannot therefore answer back in the way they like (this, incidently, is why people who shout at waiters should be considered a sub-human species). And it is arrogantly and idiotically out of touch for a corporate CFO to demand that someone in a low paid job goes and works elsewhere in a country where 13 million people are unemployed – let alone asking her how she can “sleep at night”.

Now, there is a great deal of humbug about the way the populist right’s claim to represent ordinary folk against the “liberal elite”. Yet there is also a strand of truth to claims that parts of Liberal America are infected with a certain lofty condescension towards many of their fellow countrymen. This was evident in Obama’s patronising comments about jobless folk in America’s rust belt clinging to their “guns and bibles” in response to their economic frustrations.

Let’s fight homophobia. And while we’re at it, let’s fight the class war against shit-bags like Adam M. Smith

Obama’s comment may have been patronising, but that doesn’t make it untrue. Nor should we shy away from criticising working class prejudices just because we are fighting for working class equality. Recourse to guns and Bibles, to racism or homophobia, is the wrong response to class oppression. And in offering an alternative, we should not be afraid to point out how wrong it is.

That said, that video is stupid and the guy’s an idiot. It almost seems to me a satire on right-on liberals more than anything else.
