Union leader arrested, humiliated for speaking up for cleaner on Kings X picket line
Posted Under: Uncategorized
Today cleaners were on strike and picketing at Kings Cross Station. Steve Hedley, assistant General Secretary of the RMT, was there in support of the strike when he saw a cleaner being detained by the police for no clear reason.
Hedley – who was recent elected to his post on a radical ticket – went to investigate, and was told to “butt out” or face arrest. When he responded by explaining that he was RMT official fans had a right to be there, the police responded by arresting him.
“I was then handcuffed, and humiliatingly marched through Kings Cross Station” Hedley said. He was imprisoned for five hours before being released without charge. He now plans to sue the British Transport police for false arrest and imprisonment.
